At the same time, it will affect only the diseased parts of your gums, leaving the rest of your soft tissues intact. At NY Center for Esthetic and Laser Dentistry, you can avoid the discomfort, sutures, and extended recovery time associated with traditional periodontal care.
LANAP® uses advanced Millennium™ lasers to treat gum disease, preserving your smile and overall health with less discomfort than traditional methods.
Are You a Candidate for the LANAP® Procedure?
If you struggle with moderate to advanced gum disease, you are likely a candidate for laser periodontal treatment. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common condition that develops when you have an accumulation of oral bacteria. The bacteria can move deep into your gum tissue, forming pockets around your teeth. Eventually, your gums can begin to recede and pull away from tooth roots. The symptoms of gum disease include:
- Red, inflamed gums
- Sensitivity, especially in regards to temperature
- Loose teeth
- Tooth loss
- Visible gum recession
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to schedule a consultation with Dr. Poiman as soon as possible.
How Does LANAP® Work?
LANAP® stands for laser-assisted new attachment procedure. The treatment can eradicate infected gum tissue and gum pockets caused by gum disease. After the procedure, your oral health can significantly improve as your gums reattach to your teeth, protecting your dental roots.
“LANAP® recovery should be very quick. Patients can usually return to work and their daily activities immediately after treatment.”
Durning a LANAP® procedure, Dr. Poiman will insert a tiny Millennium™ laser fiber between your dental roots and gums. This fiber is about the size of three human hairs, so it should not cause you any discomfort. The laser can kill oral bacteria without affecting the nearby healthy tissues. Dr. Poiman can then use an ultrasonic scaler to vibrate tartar and plaque deposits from your dental roots. These deposits are flushed away with an anti-bacterial rinse. Dr. Poiman will re-treat the pocket with the laser to make sure that all bacteria is gone. This second laser treatment also helps to create a seal that will help your gums reattach to your teeth.
LANAP® can safeguard your systemic health because gum disease has been linked to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke.
The Benefits of the LANAP® Procedure
LANAP® offers a number of benefits over traditional periodontal treatment, including:
- The LANAP® procedure is typically faster than older therapies.
- The Millennium™ laser can seal your blood vessels, so Dr. Poiman will not need to place any sutures.
- Your recovery should be very quick. Patients can usually return to work and their daily activities immediately after treatment.
- LANAP® involves minimal discomfort, and the laser should not cause gum inflammation.
- Proper periodontal care will protect your smile and prevent tooth loss. LANAP® can safeguard your systemic health because gum disease has been linked to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke.
