Customized In-office and Take-home Teeth Whitening
Professional strength teeth whitening at our Manhattan, NY, practice can make a dramatic improvement in the shade of your teeth. At NY Center for Esthetic and Laser Dentistry, we offer both in-office Zoom! and take-home Opalescence® whitening. Dr. David J. Poiman will consider your cosmetic goals, oral health, and budget to determine the right type of whitening for you. In many cases, he can also combine whitening with other cosmetic procedures in a complete smile makeover. Alone or in conjunction with other treatments, whitening can have stunning effects on your grin and your overall appearance.
Are You a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
If you struggle with extrinsic dental stains, teeth whitening is probably a great option for you. Extrinsic stains affect the outer layers of the teeth. They usually develop because of certain foods and drinks. Coffee, red wine, tomato sauce, and similar products can deposit dark-colored molecules in your enamel. Over time, your teeth will take on a yellow or brown tint. Age, smoking, genetics, and environmental factors can also contribute to extrinsic stains.
For truly comprehensive effects, Dr. Poiman will often combine in-office and take-home whitening.
Unfortunately, teeth whitening is not appropriate for intrinsic, or internal, stains. This type of discoloration most frequently develops because of specific medications. Dental infection and amalgam fillings can also stain your teeth from the inside. Although whitening will not be appropriate, Dr. Poiman can recommend an alternative treatment, like porcelain veneers.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Whitening treatments use peroxide-based gel to break down dental stains and lighten teeth. If you choose in-office Zoom!, your doctor will coat your teeth in the gel, activating the material with a specially designed light. As the peroxide takes effect, oxygen molecules will move through your teeth, chemically breaking apart stains. Usually, Dr. Poiman or your hygienist will apply three coats of gel, which will be removed after 15 minutes each. In just one hour, the treatment can dramatically brighten your smile.
Take-home whitening also uses peroxide-based whitening gel. However, instead of applying it directly to your dental enamel, you will place it inside whitening trays, which you will wear around your teeth. If you decide on take-home whitening, you will have two options to choose from. Opalescence 10% has a lower concentration of peroxide. With this type of gel, you will wear your whitening trays overnight. Because Opalescence 20% has a higher concentration, you will wear the trays for a much shorter time, typically about 30 minutes a day.
For truly comprehensive effects, Dr. Poiman will often combine in-office and take-home whitening. For example, he may perform treatment in the office for immediate results. Then he can provide take-home trays so that you can perform touch-ups on your own. In other cases, he may perform whitening along with veneers and other esthetic dentistry procedures.
The Benefits of Teeth Whitening
Both in-office and take-home whitening are trusted, effective treatments that can lighten your smile by several shades. In turn, your brighter teeth can rejuvenate your whole face and help you to look several years younger. You could also enjoy an increased sense of confidence and find yourself smiling more often.
At NY Center for Esthetic and Laser Dentistry, we are committed to providing personalized and convenient care. We will consider all of your unique goals when creating your personally tailored treatment plan. In-office care may be appropriate if you want immediate results or if you are getting ready for a big upcoming event. On the other hand, take-home whitening may be your best choice if time is not an issue or if you are looking for the most economical option.
