The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique Is a Minimally Invasive Treatment for Gum Recession
Gum recession can dramatically affect the look of your smile. In the past, gum grafting was the only viable treatment for gum recession. Today, NY Center for Esthetic and Laser Dentistry proudly offers the innovative Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique at our Manhattan, NY, office. When you undergo this minimally invasive treatment, Dr. David J. Poiman will insert a tiny surgical instrument into a pinhole incision. Then he can gently reposition your gums so that they cover your tooth roots. Dr. Poiman is committed to continuing education so that he can stay informed about the latest developments in dentistry, which allows him to perform the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique with skill and precision.
Are You a Candidate?
If you are suffering from mild to moderate gum recession, you may be a candidate for the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. There are several factors that can lead to gum recession, including:
- Aggressive brushing
- Irregularly positioned teeth
Periodontitis is one of the most common causes of gum recession. However, if you have active gum disease, you will not qualify for the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. Nonetheless, after appropriate periodontal care, such as the LANAP® procedure, this minimally invasive treatment may be an outstanding option.
How Does the Procedure Work?
After numbing your gums, Dr. Poiman will create a tiny entry point – the size of a pinhole – in your gums. Through this incision, he will use a specially designed tool to free your gums from the underlying bone structure. Then he can carefully and gently guide the soft tissue down until it covers your exposed dental roots. Finally, he will place minute strips of collagen inside your gums to stabilize the tissue and to promote a faster recovery. The entire procedure will typically last less than an hour, and healing should take place very quickly.
Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique vs. Traditional Gum Grafting
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is much simpler and more efficient than traditional gum grafting surgery. To perform traditional grafting, your dentist would need to remove a sample of tissue from your soft palate. Then he would position the tissue over your dental roots, using small sutures to connect it to your gum line. Healing could take several weeks, and you would need to avoid strenuous exercise for a few days, as this could cause the incisions to reopen. In addition, with traditional gum grafting, you would also need to take care so the incision on the roof of your mouth could heal properly.
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is much simpler and more efficient than traditional gum grafting surgery.
In contrast, the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique requires no incisions and no sutures. Recovery is much faster, and you can often go back to your normal activities on the same day. In fact, in many cases, the pinhole incision will heal overnight. Most importantly, this technique can ease dental sensitivity and give you a smooth, beautiful gum line.
